Ken R. Coelho is the Director of Graduate and Continuing Medical Education at Alameda Health System (AHS), an integrated public health care system organized as a public hospital authority comprising five hospitals and four outpatient clinics in the San Francisco bay area. Prior to taking on this role, Ken served as a Senior Clinical Quality Improvement Manager. Prior to joining AHS, he was the Director of Quality Improvement and Assurance at the Institute on Aging (IOA), a San Francisco-based non-profit dedicated to preserving the dignity, independence and well-being of aging adults and people living with disabilities. In this role, Ken reported to the Chief Operating Officer driving process improvement and support for all quality improvement activities.

Ken’s interests include accreditation and leadership development; graduate medical education; public health, global health & epidemiology; and quality & patient safety. He has over 15 years of experience in healthcare and quality improvement, accreditation, analytics and operations.  He has experience in educating, managing and leading teams in support of continuous process improvement and change management. He has experience working in the public and county health services in City/County of San Francisco and County of Alameda, as well as with academia. Ken also served as the Accreditation Manager in the graduate medical education at the University of California, San Francisco’s School of Medicine.

Ken has participated in the Bay Area Patient Safety Collaborative Leadership Institute and has completed the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) Certificate in Quality and Patient Safety. He previously served on the board of the United Nations Association of San Francisco, and Goa Sudharop. He is also an accreditation site visitor for the Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB) and member of the ACGME Osteopathic Principles Committee. He has completed doctoral studies in health sciences at A.T. Still University of Health Sciences, and has completed the master’s program in Global Health Sciences at the University of California, San Francisco, and the Fellowship in Public Health and Primary Care at the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom. He completed his undergraduate studies in Psychology at the University of California, Berkeley. He was recently elected Fellow of the U.K. Royal Society for Public Health.
